Egypt to open Rafah crossing for Gaza delegation

Saturday 5-November-2016

The Egyptian authorities decided Saturday to exceptionally reopen the Rafah crossing on Sunday to allow a Palestinian economic delegation to cross.

Spokesman for the Palestinian Interior Ministry in Gaza Strip affirmed in a brief statement on Saturday that Rafah crossing would be opened tomorrow to allow the travel of more than 100 Gazan businessmen in order to participate in an economic conference in Egypt.

The border crossing is scheduled to be reopened on Thursday for the delegation’s return the spokesman added.

No more details were revealed about humanitarian cases’ travel.

Head of the Palestinian Contractors Union Osama Kahil had earlier revealed in a statement to the PIC that an economic delegation is expected to travel on Sunday to Egypt to participate in an Egyptian-Palestinian economic conference in Cairo.

The conference will discuss ways to develop Palestinian economy by alleviating the siege on Gaza and allowing the construction materials’ access in addition to strengthening the Egyptian-Gazan relations he pointed out.

Gazans complain that frequent border closures by Egypt in conjunction with an ten-year-old Israeli blockade on the coastal enclave have contributed to the Strip’s worsening economic and humanitarian conditions.
