In a scene where pain intertwines with mystery, the family of Abdulhadi Ahmed Ghali is living one of the toughest moments of their lives after losing contact with him following the Israeli occupation forces’ incursion into the Red Crescent area west of Khan Yunis in February 2024.
Abdulhadi, who is only thirty-six years old, is a simple worker supporting his family, which consists of his wife and young child. According to his wife, the constant anxiety about his fate has deprived her of sleep since the day he disappeared. She drifts off and wakes up hoping to hear news that reassures her heart, while her questions continue to haunt her: Is he alive? Or did he become a martyr in those moments that shattered the family’s life?
Injury and loss
His close friend, Jamal Abu Saeed, recounts that Abdulhadi was shot by the occupation forces while he was in the Red Crescent area. Later, his wife was forced to flee with their child to safer areas, which deepened her sorrow and heightened her anxiety about her husband’s fate.
Since then, the question “Where is he?” has become a daily concern that weighs heavily on the family, who continue to search for any lead that could help them uncover Abdulhadi’s fate. As for his mother, she can barely bear her continuous thoughts about her son’s fate; her heart is shattered with waiting. With every passing minute, her hope grows that any information, even if harsh, will reach her to reveal the truth of what happened. “Even if he has become a martyr, I want to know,” she expresses her profound suffering with these simple yet painful words, highlighting the agony she endures, a pain that time cannot alleviate.
This situation is part of the daily suffering faced by the people of Gaza, who continue to confront their uncertain fate due to ongoing wars and military assaults. Nevertheless, the family’s hope of knowing Abdulhadi’s fate remains the only ray of hope they cling to in the darkness of waiting.
The Abdulhadi family, like many others of the more than 14,000 Palestinians who have lost contact with their loved ones during the genocide, continues to search for them in vain. Wherever one looks in Gaza, the only undeniable truth is that this suffering will only end with the revelation of the truth, no matter how bitter it may be.
