Euro-Med urges ICRC to save lives of preemies at Al-Shifa Hospital

Saturday 11-November-2023

The Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor has urged the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to take urgent action to save the lives of premature newborns at Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City in light of its exposure to a complete power blackout and continual Israeli attacks.

In a statement on Saturday the Euro-Med Monitor called on the Red Cross to urgently provide Al-Shifa Hospital with an electric generator and its fuel needs in order to save the lives of premature babies who are vulnerable to increased risk of death.

Euro-Med warned that newborn babies and patients who rely on life support devices would start to die one after another due to the complete power outage at the hospital.

Doctors at the hospital said that one of the premature newborns died inside an incubator at the hospital in the past hours warning of a similar fate threatening 39 newborns in the coming hours if the neonatal intensive care unit was not provided with electricity soon according to Euro-Med.

Euro-Med called on the Red Cross to refrain from issuing warnings and condemnations and to take urgent steps to save the lives of newborns and patients in Gaza in light of Israel’s persistence in besieging and attacking medical facilities.
