UN Warning: Risk of death for 113,000 pregnant and breastfeeding women in Gaza

Monday 18-December-2023

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has confirmed that “45,000 pregnant women and 68,000 breastfeeding women in Gaza face the risk of anemia, bleeding, and death.”

According to a post published by the Fund on its “X platform” account on Sunday, it stated that pregnant and breastfeeding women in Gaza face a “severe lack of food.”

It emphasized that “the severe food shortage in Gaza exposes pregnant and breastfeeding women to the risk of anemia, pregnancy poisoning, bleeding, and even death.”

Since the start of the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip, 18,787 citizens have been killed, while the number of injured has reached 50,897, with 70% of the victims being women and children, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.

The number of martyrs among women and children in Gaza exceeds that of Ukraine.

In a related context, Philippe Lazzarini, the Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), said that the number of child and women martyrs in the Gaza Strip over 40 days exceeds the number of civilian deaths during the war in Ukraine.

Lazzarini added in press statements that “the situation in Gaza is unprecedented and shocking.”

The Gaza Ministry of Health revealed last Friday that 8,000 children and 6,200 women have been martyred since last October 7th.
