The Palestinian Commission of Detainees’ and Ex-Detainees’ Affairs has affirmed that the Israeli prison service (IPS) persists in pursuing a policy of abuse and punishment against the Palestinian female detainees in its jails.

In a statement, the Commission said that the IPS had escalated its abusive practices against the Palestinian female detainees since October 7, 2023 through holding them incommunicado, depriving them of their basic rights, strip-searching them, medically neglecting them and starving them, not to mention their exposure to different forms of harassment and maltreatment during and after their detention.

The Commission’s lawyer reported, following a recent visit to Damon jail, that the prison administration had tightened its grip on the Palestinian women in the facility and made every cell that used to accommodate five crammed with 10 detainees.

The Damon jailers also seized the electric fans from the cells and closed the small windows at the doors of the sections to block air from entering to increase humidity and heat levels inside the cells, according to the lawyer.

There are 78 Palestinian female detainees in Israeli jails, including 71 in Damon prison. Three of the women in this jail are from Gaza and two others are pregnant.
