Head of Hamas’s political bureau Ismail Haneyya has been assassinated in Iran’s capital, Tehran, according to a statement from the Movement, which blamed Israel for his death.

In a statement released at dawn Wednesday, the Hamas Movement mourned its political bureau leader Ismail Haneyya, saying he was “martyred in a treacherous Zionist airstrike on his residence in the Iranian capital, Tehran.”

Haneyya and one of his bodyguards were killed after the building where they were staying was struck, Hamas’s statement said, adding that Haneyya was in Tehran to attend the inauguration ceremony of Iran’s president Masoud Pezeshkian, on Tuesday.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) also announced Haneyya’s assassination.

“Early this morning, the residence of Ismail Haneyya in Tehran was struck, resulting in his martyrdom along with his body guards. The incident is under investigation and will be announced soon,” the IRGC said in a statement.
