The Deputy Executive Director of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Ted Chaiban, stressed the need for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, an end to the targeting and maiming of children, and enabling of the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Strip.

The UN official urged in a press statement on Thursday evening the need to protect children and improve security measures and operating procedures for humanitarian workers, in addition to facilitating the movement of children who are separated from their families.

Chaiban emphasized that the humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to significantly deteriorate, with the number of displaced individuals rising from 1.7 to 1.9 million, noting that areas that were previously considered safe have been bombed, and there is no longer a safe shelter.

He pointed out that the accumulation of untreated waste and unsanitary conditions have led to an increased risk of disease, especially with families resorting to digging in garbage in search for cooking materials.

The UN official reported that the flow of humanitarian aid has decreased significantly, as the daily number of aid trucks has plummeted from 100 trucks in August to just 15 trucks in September, due to security reasons, exacerbating the suffering of the civilian population.

In the same context, Chaiban sounded the alarm over the loss of an entire generation as children in Gaza has lost almost an academic year now, emphasizing the tragic loss of over 14,000 children who were martyred in Gaza since the beginning of the ongoing Israeli genocide war on the Strip, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.
