The Palestinian Commission of Detainees’ and Ex-Detainees’ Affairs has unveiled new details about the death of Palestinian prisoner Mohamed al-Aref, a 45-year-old from Nour Shams refugee camp in Tulkarem, in Israeli detention, affirming that he was martyred as a result of his exposure to torture at the hands of Israeli jailers.
In a statement on Thursday, the Commission explained that a preliminary medical report obtained by al-Aref’s family following the autopsy that took place on December 17, 2024 confirmed that he had been excruciatingly tortured by Israeli interrogators with the aim of killing him.
“Definitely, there was a decision to kill him from the time he was arrested on November 28, 2024,” the Commission said.
The Commission pointed out that the autopsy findings highlighted the presence of multiple signs on the martyr’s body confirming that he had faced extensive physical abuse that led to his suffering from a heart attack, a blocked artery in the lungs, brain bleed, and other internal injuries.
The Commission said that what happened to prisoner Mohamed al-Aref in Israeli detention was part of Israel’s systematic and decades-long crimes against Palestinian prisoners in its jails, noting that Israel’s use of torture against prisoners and detainees had escalated and reached unprecedented levels since the genocidal war on Gaza started.
