Hamas appreciates UN call for opening Gaza crossings

Sunday 15-July-2007

GAZA (PIC)– The Hamas Movement on Sunday appreciated the UN secretary general Ban Ki-Moon’s call for opening all crossings leading in and out of Palestinian lands especially in the Gaza Strip.

Dr. Sami Abu Zuhri the Hamas spokesman in Gaza said in a press release that the UN position exposes those refusing to open the terminals especially Israeli occupation and the PA leadership of president Mahmoud Abbas.

He noted that Ban Ki-Moon’s call came in harmony with Hamas Movement’s assertion that the Rafah crossing should be opened immediately to end the suffering of thousands of stranded Palestinians.

Noting that a state of fury was engulfing the Palestinian street over the continued closure of the Rafah terminal he said that humanitarian and health conditions of those trapped Palestinians are worsening on daily basis.

Ban Ki-Moon had urged for the re-opening of the Rafah terminal and all other crossings leading to Gaza in order to allow the smooth flow of humanitarian material workers and goods. He expressed deep worry over the deteriorating economic conditions in Gaza due to that closure.

The UN secretary general said on Friday that a World Bank report indicated that more than 3000 shops were closed in Gaza last month leading to the unemployment of 65000 people. He warned that if the remaining economic ventures in Gaza collapsed then the entire population there would be dependent almost wholly on foreign assistance.

Ban Ki-Moon also urged the immediate opening of Karni crossing before commercial traffic.

For his part Dr. Salah Al-Bardawil the spokesman of the Hamas-affiliated change and reform parliamentary bloc deplored in a press release on Sunday Fatah’s insistence in collaboration with Israel on imposing siege on the Gaza Strip and increasing the suffering of its people.

“There are two types of people in the Palestinian arena a patriot and a conspirator working with the Zionist enemy on closing the crossings” Bardawil charged.
