Hamas criticizes AUC for granting Israel observer status

Friday 1-October-2021

Palestinian resistance group Hamas has decried in a press release on Thursday a decision by the African Union Commission (AUC) to grant Israel an observer status at the pan-African bloc.

The group considered the move as a disgrace to the African Union’s liberation struggle.

It also called on African states to cancel the decision during their up-coming Executive Council meeting to be held in mid-October 2021.

Hamas further urged the African nations to end all security military intelligence commercial and diplomatic ties with the Apartheid state of Israel.

On the other hand the Palestinian resistance group hailed the African nations who earlier declared their total opposition to the decision by the AUC chairman Moussa Faki Mahamat to grant Israel an observer status.

Last August Israel announced that it has attained observer status at the AU after nearly two decades of diplomatic efforts.

It is noteworthy that relations between Africa and Israel have been tense since the 1960s against the backdrop of the outbreak of national liberation movements in the continent and the escalation of the Arab-Israeli conflict.

The Arab-Israeli wars in 1967 and 1973 prompted the sub-Saharan African countries to sever their relations with Israel. However Tel Aviv sought over the following years to improve relations with many countries of the continent.
