Hamas’s bloc to vote against extending state of emergency

Saturday 14-July-2007

GAZA (PIC)– MP Dr. Salah Al-Bardawil the Hamas-affiliated change and reform bloc’s spokesman has announced that the bloc intends to vote against extending the state of emergency declared by PA chief Mahmoud Abbas.

Bardawil told daily ‘Palestine’ published on Saturday that his bloc would not allow an extension of the state of emergency during the PLC session to be held on Sunday at the call of PLC chairmanship

“The state of emergency cannot be extended without the consent of two thirds of PLC’s members and if the session is not held the state of emergency is considered nullified and cannot be extended” the MP explained.

Bardawil said “According to the parliamentary blocs’ regulations in the PLC the head of any bloc is entitled to represent and vote instead of his bloc’s absent members who are in this case held in the Israeli jails”.

He also pointed out that Hamas’s bloc can hold a session with a quorum of 76 of its members attending highlighting that Hamas MPs know exactly how the PLC functions.

With regard to Hamas’s boycott of the recent session called for by Abbas he explained: “We boycotted the session because the PA chief exceeded his authority when he ignored the PLC speaker and interfered in the legislative powers.”
