Israeli court defers trial of hunger strikers struggling for survival

Sunday 18-December-2016

An Israeli court on Sunday adjourned the trial of the two Palestinian hunger strikers Anas Shedid and Ahmad Abu Fara to Tuesday.

Head of the Prisoners and Ex-Prisoners Committee Issa Qaraqe said the Israeli Supreme Court decided during a hearing attended by the committee’s lawyer and the hunger strikers attorney Ahlam Haddad to postpone the detainees’ trial to Tuesday.

A doctor from the Israeli Wolfson medical center was tasked to write a medical report on their health conditions.

The Israeli court proposed forced treatment and feeding against Shedid and Abu Fara who have been on an open-ended hunger strike for 86 days running.

Qaraqe said today’s decision amounts to a legitimization of murder against Shedid and Abu Fara whose condition has reached a point of no return after they stopped to drink water for the 6th day in a row.

“This is a legitimization of murder. Force-feeding contravenes all medical and humanitarian laws” he added.

Qaraqe slammed the Israeli panel of adjudicators for their apathy as regards the critical health conditions endured by the two hunger strikers adding that the court lacks transparency and stands as a puppet in the hands of the Israeli stakeholders.

He urged all international and human rights institutions to take urgent action and to call on the Israeli occupation government to release the two hunger strikers before it is too late.
