Relief agencies warn of human disaster in Nahr Al-Bared if shelling continues

Sunday 3-June-2007

BEIRUT (PIC)– International human rights organizations have warned of an imminent human tragedy in Nahr Al-Bared refugee camp in north Lebanon as a result of the heavy shelling by the Lebanese army.

While medics and eyewitnesses affirmed that Palestinian refugees were among the victims as a result of the bombardment; others said that during the shelling many shelters were pounded which led to their closure while Palestinian refugees were inside.

The international relief agencies have appealed to the warring parties to allow the entry of relief supplies into the camp and the transfer of the dead and wounded from it.

Sheikh Mohammad Al-Haj a member of the Palestine Scholars League in Lebanon stated contacts were underway between Fatah Al-Islam and the Lebanese army to reach a short truce in order to transfer the wounded out and to be able to supply the civilians with necessary needs.

For his part; the head of ICRC in Lebanon said the relief convoys failed to secure the delivery of food rations and other supplies into the camp as a result of the renewed clashes since Friday adding “Things are getting more difficult for the civilians as the rations previously provided are sufficient only for a few days.”

Furthermore spokeswoman of UNRWA Hoda Samra affirmed that the situation was getting worse inside the camp pointing out that UNRWA had been unable to enter food rations into the camp for three days.
