The number of administrative detainees in Israeli jails has made a leap of up to 300% human rights researcher Amal Al-Tawil said.
Speaking with the PIC researcher a-Tawil from the Palestinian Prisoners Center for Studies said an average of 60 to 70 cases of administrative detention has been recorded on a monthly basis among the Palestinians.
The list of detainees included women minors and elderly civilians.
The researcher spoke out against the swift hike in the number of administrative detainees in Israeli jails since the start of the anti-occupation Jerusalem Intifada in October 2015.
She added that dozens of Palestinian detainees have embarked on hunger strikes in protest at being held arbitrarily in Israeli lock-ups and in light of the apathy maintained by the international community and human rights institutions.
Al-Tawil called for mobilizing support for the cause of Palestinian administrative detainees urging the Palestinian Authority (PA) chaired by Mahmoud Abbas to take up its duties vis-à-vis the affair and appeal to international courts to bring administrative detention to a halt.
Administrative detention is a policy pursued by the Israeli occupation authorities that legitimizes the incarceration of Palestinians with neither charge nor trial for renewable prison-terms.
