Wednesday 15-April-2009

DAMASCUS (PIC)– Khaled Mishaal the political bureau chairman of Hamas met Tuesday evening with a high-level delegation from the British House of Commons led by MP Roger Godsiff in his office in Damascus.

A press release issued by the Hamas Movement and a copy of which was received by the PIC said that this visit comes within European efforts to open channels of communication with Hamas and to develop a deeper understanding of the Palestinian cause through direct talks with the Movement as well as to know its vision on the latest developments in the Palestinian arena.

Members of the delegation expressed their conviction that there can be no peace in the region without talking to Hamas which won the confidence of the Palestinian people in a democratic and transparent process. They also expressed solidarity with the Gaza people who suffer a lot as a result of the siege and the destructive Israeli war.

For his part Mishaal conveyed to the delegation his Movement’s vision on different Palestinian issues castigating the international community for not assuming its moral and humanitarian responsibilities towards the suffering of Gaza people and towards thwarting all efforts to reconstruct Gaza through setting political conditions.

The Hamas leader also underlined that the external interventions are the main cause for not achieving a national reconciliation so far calling on the international community to respect the will and options of the Palestinian people.

He stressed during the meeting that the effective international pressure on Israel into ending its occupation and recognizing the Palestinian rights is the base for a just solution to the conflict in the region.

In another context Amin Abu Rashid the coordinator of humanitarian affairs and representative of the European aid fleet in Holland said that there are a number of important organizations in Netherlands that decided to participate in the “hope fleet” that will set sail from Italy to the besieged Gaza Strip next May.

In a press statement received by the PIC Gretta Duisenberg the wife of the former European central bank president and the head of the Dutch stop the occupation organization said that she will participate in the convoy.

Duisenberg had recently sent a number of earphones for the deaf children of Gaza through Jordan.
