Tuesday 24-March-2009

BEIRUT (PIC)– Hamas on Monday denounced the assassination of Kamal Midhat the deputy representative of the PLO in Lebanon hailing his efforts in reconciling Palestinian factions.

Osama Hamdan Hamas representative in Lebanon said in a press statement that Midhat played a major role in bridging gaps among various factions especially during the latest Israeli war on Gaza.

Midhat exerted big efforts to unify the Palestinian positions and in calming the conditions in Lebanon between Fatah and Hamas Hamdan underlined.

He charged that the assassination of the PLO official was surely meant to destabilize the Palestinian situation which was heading towards restoring national unity as evident in the Cairo dialog.

The only one benefiting from the murder of Midhat is the one bearing grudge against the Palestinian people which is clearly the “Zionist enemy” and those who work for it the Hamas representative said adding that the matter is in the hands of the Lebanese security.

For its part Islamic Jihad Movement described the death of Midhat as a “national loss” in view of the martyr’s great concern with national unity and stability of Palestinians in Lebanon.

Abu Emad the Jihad representative in Lebanon said that the “criminal crime” targeted the Palestinian presence in Lebanon in addition to that country’s stability other than deepening division in the Palestinian arena and foiling inter-Palestinian conciliation efforts.

Midhat was killed in a bomb blast that targeted his motorcade on Monday evening at the entrance of Mia Mia refugee camp near Sidon in southern Lebanon.

Security sources said that the blast also killed Akram Dhaher the sports official in the PLO office in Beirut along with two other persons one of them was Midhat’s bodyguard.

The PLO official who carries a PhD in military science from the former Soviet Union had survived a number of assassination attempts.
