Palestinian gov’t slams unjust prison sentence against Sheikh Salah

Tuesday 27-July-2010

GAZA (PIC)– The Palestinian government in Gaza deplored the imprisonment sentence issued by Israel against Sheikh Ra’ed Salah the head of the Islamic Movement in the 1948 occupied lands and said it is part of previous attempts to get rid of him and keep him away from occupied Jerusalem.

In a press release on Monday the government said that Sheikh Salah was and still is targeted by Israel whose troops last time tried to assassinate him during the deadly attack on the Freedom Flotilla aid convoy.

It also recalled that Israel also issued many punitive decisions against the Sheikh for his role in defending the Islamic holy sites in Jerusalem including a ban on his entry into the Aqsa Mosque and the old holy city pointing out that he was also jailed many times before.

The government did not rule out that Israel locked up the Sheikh in its jails in order to carry out a new serious aggressive act in the holy city.

For his part coordinator of the higher leadership committee for Hamas prisoners Abbas Al-Sayed said in a letter leaked from his cell that the imprisonment of Sheikh Salah reflected Israel’s racist policies and its persistence in flouting its own law when it comes to Palestinians.

Sayed also hailed in his letter the positions of Sheikh Salah in defense of the Islamic holy sites in Jerusalem and described him as a school whose teachings will remain alive as long as Jerusalem is under occupation.
