700 Palestinian prisoners start gradual hunger strike on Tuesday

Monday 6-February-2012

GAZA (PIC)– The ministry of prisoners in Gaza has said that 700 prisoners in the Israeli Raymond jail would start a gradual hunger strike on Tuesday demanding improvement of their incarceration conditions.

The ministry said in a press release on Monday that the strike would start with a weekly hunger strike each Tuesday that would later be escalated in the event the prison administration did not respond to their demands.

It said that the prisoners listed nine demands topped by ending solitary confinement returning all prisoners in isolation to the wards allowing family visits especially to the Gaza prisoners who have been deprived of that right en masse for the past six years and allowing telephone calls to relatives.

The demands also include restoring university education improving food at the prison canteen ending the policy of medical neglect allowing broadcast of a number of satellite channels topped by Al-Jazeera and ending mass punishments especially storming of cells.

The ministry pointed out that ignoring those demands would mean igniting an open ended hunger strike that might include all prisons.
