NABLUS (PIC)– The families of political detainees in Nablus city staged a sit-in on Monday to demand the Palestinian authority and its security forces to release their relatives from Al-Juneid jail.
The sit-in was called for by the family committee of political detainees and the Muslim youth association. Both of these civil groups are engaged in a peaceful struggle to curb the security policies of the PA and defend public freedoms in the West Bank.
“Freedom for Al-Juneid prisoners” was the rallying cry of protesting families who also carried pictures of political detainees and banners demanding an end to political arrests for the sake of the national reconciliation.
Prominent national figures lawmakers and human rights activists from Nablus also partook in the sit-in.
The families distributed a statement titled “Our demands from the committee of freedoms” the committee that was formed in recent Cairo talks by the Palestinian rivals.
Some families expressed their disappointment at the slow progress of the national reconciliation and the fruitless meetings between the Palestinian rivals especially the failure of the committee of freedoms to release their relatives from Al-Juneid jail.
Some of Al-Juneid political prisoners have spent more than four years in jail either because of their political positions or resistance activities.
