Jailed West Bank mayor holds Abbas responsible for his family’s safety

Saturday 16-June-2007

RAMALLAH (PIC)– Sheikh Jamal Al-Taweel the mayor of El-Bireh city and one of Hamas’ prominent figures in the West Bank held PA chief Mahmoud Abbas fully responsible for the safety of his family amidst the ongoing frenzied Fatah campaign against Hamas cadres in the West Bank.

In a statement he issued from inside his detention cell and a copy of which was obtained by the PIC Taweel affirmed that the prisoners were shocked by reports affirming that Abbas’ security forces had stormed his house and attempted to kidnap his wife and children.

The kidnappers failed to locate Taweel’s wife and children but they kidnapped her two brothers and her brother-in-law to put pressure on them to surrender the mayor’s wife.

Taweel described the kidnapping attempt as grave transgressing of Islamic and humanistic values and ethics calling on prudent people in the Palestinian arena to take their role in bridling such vandal groups.

“I put my wife and children as a trust in the hand of all honorable people in Palestine to protect and defend them” Taweel stressed.

The mayor furthermore pointed out that such an act was sending a wrong message to the jailed resistance leaders that their families weren’t protected.

Hamas Movement for its part accused the mutiny trend of Abbas’ Fatah faction in the West Bank of launching a racial cleansing operation against Hamas’ cadres supporters and sympathizers as they kidnapped hundreds of Hamas’ cadres and torched tens of Hamas-affiliated societies and charities.

The Movement registered around 205 aggressions by those vandals against Hamas-associated institutions and cadres in the past five days.

It also affirmed that Fatah vandalism in the West Bank was done with US and Israeli blessings as the IOF troops allowed Fatah armed men to pass through IOF barriers freely after knowing they were heading to destroy Hamas buildings and kidnap its cadres.

Yet Hamas called on prudent Fatah figures and the Palestinian people in the West Bank to stand up against those hooligans to thwart their attempts of igniting lawlessness in the West Bank as they did in Gaza Strip before Hamas fighters routed them.

The Movement also expressed great gratitude to the PA security elements who rejected to participate in such vandalism.
