Supreme Judicial Council in Palestine urges end of violence in Gaza

Thursday 17-May-2007

GAZA (PIC)– The Supreme Judicial Council in Palestine which is headed by Palestinian chief justice Sheikh Tayseer Al-Tamimi has called for the immediate halt of internecine fighting in Gaza Strip between Hamas and Fatah factions.

The Council further invited all concerned parties to exercise highest level of self-restraint and to avoid sinking into the swamp of internal strife.

“These regrettable and serious incidents serve only the Zionist occupation’s interests that had been wagering on Palestinian infighting a long time ago” a statement issued by the council underlined.

It also asserted that the unfortunate clashes coincided with the anniversary of the Palestinian Nakba (catastrophe) that must be a uniting factor for all Palestinian parties.

Finally the council underscored that Palestinian unity and harmony was an essential factor in the Palestinian quest for liberation and independence and therefore it emphasized all warring parties are invited to end all forms of differences and to advance the country’s interests over their factional or personal interests.

Meanwhile Islam Shahwan the spokesman of the executive force of the PA interior ministry unveiled that in spite of the goodwill gesture on the part of Hamas Movement of unilaterally holding fire the mutiny trend within Fatah faction was persistent in undermining that goodwill and in spreading mischief in Gaza Strip.

He also cautioned that further breaches of the ceasefire on the part of Fatah vandals and PA security forces loyal to PA chief Mahmoud Abbas could jeopardize the fragile truce and push the area into violence again.
