The European Parliament has called for a “permanent ceasefire” in the Gaza Strip and the restart of political efforts to find a solution to the conflict between the Palestinians and the Israelis.
The resolution, which is purely symbolic and carries no legal weight, was approved with 312 votes in favor, 131 against and 72 abstentions in Strasbourg’s plenary chamber on Thursday.
European lawmakers also expressed their deep concern over the dire and rapidly deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza and asked for the “two-state solution” to the conflict between Palestinians and the Israeli regime to be revived, and for an end to the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories.
The ceasefire plea represents a significant shift in the Parliament’s previous position, adopted in October, which called for a humanitarian “pause” to allow the entry of some aid to Gaza.
Such a European resolution comes as the death toll from the Israeli genocidal war on Gaza has topped 24,000, according to the health ministry in the war-torn coastal enclave.
