Hamas urges fundamental changes in interior minister’s authority

Tuesday 8-May-2007

GAZA (PIC)– Hamas Movement has affirmed that it was awaiting PA chief Mahmoud Abbas to issue decisive and clear presidential edicts that would initiate fundamental changes in the authority of the PA interior minister to help him carry out the security plan and impose law and order in the Palestinian arena.

Fawzi Barhoum the Movement’s spokesman in Gaza Strip meanwhile hailed the meeting between Abbas and PA premier Ismail Haneyya and described it as “positive” saying that the meeting serves as a first step to end all pending issues in the Palestinian internal arena.

However he regretted that no concrete steps had been taken on the ground to fulfill the crucial demands stipulated in the Makkah agreement including the restructuring of the PA security apparatuses political pluralism and the restructuring of the PLO among other urgent issues included in the accord that was inked two months ago.

In this context Barhoum highlighted the urgency of having continuous and intensive meetings between Hamas and Fatah Movements that he stressed must be sponsored by Abbas and Haneyya to tackle all those issues.

Although Barhoum acknowledged that there were a number of internal and external factors that block the implementation of the interior ministry’s security plan yet he affirmed that if full authority and logistical supplies are given to PA interior minister Hani Al-Kawasmi in addition to ensuring independency of the Palestinian judicial system then a lot of things on the ground will favorably change.

Talking on Abbas-Haneyya meeting Barhoum pointed out that the PA chief briefed his premier on results and outcomes of his European tour as well as the efforts he made to help convince the international community to rescind the unjust siege on the Palestinian people.

On the other hand Barhoum added Haneyya put Abbas in the picture of the internal conditions in the Palestinian arena including the security question adding that both leaders had discussed the hindrances that derail the execution of the security plan affirming that Abbas showed obvious concern with the implementation and success of the plan.
