Philippe Lazzarini, the Commissioner-General of UNRWA, has said that two thirds of the agency’s schools in Gaza Strip has been bombed by Israel during its ongoing war on the enclave.
He said in a statement on X platform on Wednesday that four schools were bombed in the last four days.
“Schools have gone from safe places of education and hope for children to overcrowded shelters and often ending up a place of death and misery,” he added.
“Nine months in, under our watch, the relentless, endless killings, destruction and despair continue. Gaza is no place for children. The blatant disregard of international humanitarian law cannot become the new normal.”
Lazzarini concluded saying, “Ceasefire now before we lose what is left of our common humanity.”
The US-backed Israeli war on Gaza has entered its ninth month killing and wounding more than 125,000 citizens, most of them women and children. The war which was launched on October 7, 2023, has also led to vast destruction in the enclave’s infrastructure and destroyed more than 70% of its buildings.
