Haneyya warns of blackmailing the Palestinian people through sanctions

Saturday 28-April-2007

GAZA (PIC)– Ismail Haneyya the PA prime minister has warned the international community on Friday not to blackmail the Palestinian people through prolonging the crippling economic sanctions that had been imposed on the Palestinian people since March last year.

The premier’s warning came as he delivered the Friday Khutba (sermon) in Gaza city where he underlined that the blockade was meant to push the PA government into making political concessions describing such behavior as “plain extortion” which the Palestinian people reject.

Although he acknowledged that there were “noticeable” European efforts to lift the political and financial embargo on the Palestinian people the PA premier warned that if the siege weren’t rescinded the Palestinian people would re-evaluate their options and would take alternative decisions in accordance to their national interest.

Commenting on the anticipated meeting between Hamas’ supreme political leader Khaled Mishaal and PA chief Mahmoud Abbas in Cairo Haneyya highlighted the importance of continuing inter-Palestinian dialogue to discuss outstanding issues concerning the Palestinian people’s future.

Reflecting his deep concern over the security condition in the Palestinian arena Haneyya paid a visit to PA interior minister Hani Al-Kawasmi at his house and discussed with him security conditions in the PA-run land.

Kawasmi rendered his resignation last week protesting lack of authority and meddling of PA security heads in his job.

The PA cabinet members rejected the resignation and vowed more support for Kawasmi who agreed to remain on top of his job till his resignation is resolved in a meeting between Haneyya and Abbas in Gaza city soon.

In this regard Haneyya highlighted importance of providing the PA interior ministry with logistical support and more authority in order to help it implement the security plan that was endorsed by the PA government and gained the blessing of the Palestinian street.

Kawasmi for his part thanked the premier for the visit affirming that his views were close to those of the premier on ways and means to end the security mess in the PA-run lands.
