Yemen’s armed forces announced on Monday that it had launched counterattacks against a US aircraft carrier in the Red Sea and an Israeli target, following a deadly US strike that reportedly killed dozens in northern Yemen’s Saada province.
“In response to the massacres committed by the American aggression, we targeted the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman and its escort warships in the Red Sea and engaged them for several hours, using cruise and ballistic missiles and drones.” military spokesman Yehya Sariee said in a televised speech broadcast on Yemen’s al-Masirah satellite channel.
Spokesman Sariee added that the US aircraft carrier “has been forced to retreat and has moved to the far north of the Red Sea,” vowing that such operations would continue “until the aggression against Yemen stops.”
The spokesman also affirmed that Yemen’s armed forces “bombed a vital Israeli target in the occupied Palestinian area of Ashkelon with a ‘Jaffa’ drone” in response to the ongoing genocidal war on Gaza.
The Yemeni counterattacks followed reports of a deadly US missile attack on a detention center holding illegal African migrants in Yemen’s Saada City, which killed at least 68 people and injured 47 others.
The US strike in Saada came hours after at least eight people were reportedly killed on Sunday night in US airstrikes on the Yemeni capital, Sana’a. According to local health authorities, dozens more were also wounded as warplanes bombed the Bani al-Harith district in northern Sana’a.
