Yemen’s armed forces claimed responsibility for a missile counterattack on Ben Gurion Airport in central Israel on Sunday morning in response to the ongoing genocidal war on the Gaza Strip.

Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport outside Tel Aviv was reportedly closed today due to a Yemeni missile strike, the Hebrew media reported. The incident caused damage and injured a number of Israelis.

“We targeted Ben Gurion Airport, using a hypersonic ballistic missile that successfully hit its target,” military spokesman Yehya Sariee said in a statement aired by Yemen’s al-Masirah satellite channel.

“American and Israeli defense systems failed to intercept the missile,” he affirmed.

Sariee noted that the armed forces also launched a drone attack Saturday night on a “vital target” in Ashkelon City, southern Israel.

He stressed that Yemen’s armed forces would launch more counterattacks against Israel until “the war against the Gaza Strip stops and the humanitarian aid is allowed into the Palestinian enclave.”

On Sunday, the Israeli occupation army reported on social media that sirens sounded across central Israel after a missile was fired from Yemen. The attack prompted millions of residents to flee to shelters and safe rooms in the morning hours.

According to the Hebrew media, an Israeli man sustained moderate-to-light injuries in his limbs during the incident, while two women and another man suffered light injuries.

According to a video released by the Israeli police on social media, the explosion caused by the Yemeni missile left a crater measuring several meters in depth and width in an area inside Ben Gurion Airport.

Police footage showed the missile hitting a road leading to Terminal 3, the airport’s main terminal for international travel, with a large cloud of black smoke rising overhead.

Israel’s airports authority claimed takeoffs and landings were suspended for about an hour before operations resumed. Train services to the airport were also halted.

Yemen’s armed forces have intensified missile and drone launches in recent weeks amid renewed US airstrikes on more areas in Yemen.

Earlier, US warplanes launched 26 dawn airstrikes on Yemen, targeting different areas in the provinces of Saada, Hodeida, and Marib. There was no information about casualties.

Since October 7, 2023, and with strong US backing, the Israeli occupation regime has been committing large-scale genocidal crimes in Gaza. Its brutal attacks claimed the lives of about 52,600 civilians, mostly children and women. Additionally, 118,500 people have suffered injuries and more than 11,000 others remain missing.
