PA government endorses security plan to curb lawlessness

Sunday 15-April-2007

GAZA (PIC)– The PA unity government has unanimously endorsed the interior ministry’s security plan that aims at curbing security chaos and lawlessness in Gaza Strip and the West Bank during its weekly session on Saturday.

“The plan was widely hailed by all PA cabinet members who expressed readiness to cooperate in bringing it to full success” said PA information minister Dr. Mustafa Al-Barghouthi in the aftermath of the PA government’s session.

He also explained that the plan was divided into two parts first an urgent short-term security plan of 100 days with the aim to restore law and order in the PA-run lands and to curb lawlessness among other urgent security matters.

The second part of the plan is a long-term security plan that aims at restructuring the PA security apparatuses and preventing overlapping in their functions the PA minister further explained.

Coinciding with Barghouthi’s affirmation the PA unity government announced it has concluded deliberations on the setup of the PA National Security Council NSC which will be approved by the President soon.

At present PA security apparatuses lack unity of direction and overlap each other’s functions a matter that was nourished with the absence of a united security authority for those apparatuses.

Barghouthi added that it was decided to create the post of general-supervisor in the PA interior ministry to block exploitation of positions and to bolster the principle of self-esteem among the ministry’s cadres and officers.

Moreover Barghouthi unveiled that the government decided to refrain from giving public statements on the proposed prisoners swap deal with Israel explaining that “much talk” about the deal created wrong information and misperception on it that could hamper the entire process if not stopped.

Yet the PA minister underlined that the Palestinians have done their part as far as the swap deal is concerned and that the “ball is now in the Israeli court”.

Right after the endorsement of the security plan Hamas Movement vowed full support and cooperation to help the interior ministry carry it out successfully.

But Hamas’ spokesman in Gaza Strip Dr. Ismail Redwan called on the ministry to differentiate between the “honest” and the “dishonest” weapons in the Palestinian arena and to refrain from harming the “honorable weapon” of the Palestinian resistance.

“The plan must focus on the security mess in the Palestinian arena and mustn’t in any way harm the legitimate resistance’ weapon” Redwan confirmed.
