Barhoum highlights urgency of NSC to discipline security mess

Tuesday 10-April-2007

GAZA (PIC)– Fawzi Barhoum the spokesman of Hamas Movement in Gaza Strip has stressed the necessity to speed up the formation of the PA National Security Council (NSC) to serve as a reference to all PA security apparatuses.

According to Barhoum the formation of the NSC is crucial to curb security mess in the PA-run lands.

“We need to swiftly establish the NSC in the PA in order to tackle and supervise all security-related matters in the West Bank and Gaza Strip and the security plan presented by the PA interior minister should be under the close supervision of the NSC” Barhoum underlined.

Explaining that the security plan isn’t a “magic wand” Barhoum called on all Palestinian parties factions and civil society institutions to rally behind the PA unity government and to extend all possible help for it.

In Khan Younis city south of the Strip Hamas Movement urged warring Palestinian families not to be dragged into the marsh of revenge and bloodbath and to stop infighting or taking the law into their own hands.

The Movement also called on the PA interior minister to exercise the authority vested in him by the law in order to control security situation in the city and to stop the unfortunate incidents.

In this context Hamas affirmed that half solutions proved ineffective in dealing with family feuds and that the problem must be resolved once and for all with comprehensive national reconciliation and forgiveness among those families.

In an opinion survey conducted by the PIC website on the internet on the most serious issues confronting the PA unity government majority of the respondents (78%) believed that security and economic matters are the most crucial challenges that the PA unity government must address.

Yet 15% of the voters opined that international boycotting of Hamas-affiliated PA ministers is the issue that must be given the priority on the government’s agenda. Only 6.5% of the respondents viewed the IOF threats to invade the Gaza Strip as the problem that most bothers them.
