Merkel criticized for insulting families of Palestinian prisoners

Tuesday 3-April-2007

RAMALLAH (PIC)– Palestinian legal institutions have criticized German Chancellor Angela Merkel for meeting families of three captured IOF soldiers while ignoring families of Palestinian prisoners during her visit to occupied Palestine a couple of days ago.

The Palestinian prisoner’s club that spearheaded the criticism campaign affirmed that Merkel has insulted families of Palestinian captives and rejected to meet them or even listen to their agonies.

“This an unacceptable attitude on the part of Chancellor Merkel as she undermined the suffering of 11000 Palestinian prisoners including children and mothers and focused on the problem of three Israeli soldiers captured in combat” said a statement issued by the club and a copy of which was obtained by the PIC.

The club also noted that the Chancellor’s “biased” stand contradicts the EU position that always used to listen to both parties and evaluate events on the ground adding that
Merkel’s stance was “nearer to the USA stand rather than the EU position as far as the Palestinian issue is concerned”.

“We look forward to a serious and transparent EU stand to explain and correct such an insult to the Palestinian people and their struggle against occupation; and Germany owes the Palestinian people an explanation of the behavior” the statement further underlined.

During her meeting with the PA chief Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah city a couple of days ago Merkel urged him to work for the release of captured IOF corporal Gilad Shalit; but never mentioned anything about thousands of Palestinian civilians in Israeli jails.
