Hamas-Fatah meeting adjourned due to persistent Fatah vandalism in Gaza

Tuesday 13-March-2007

BEIT HANUN (PIC)– As the formation of the first PA unity government approaches; armed men apparently unpleased with the prevailing Palestinian harmony fired a mortar shell at the home of one of Hamas cadres in Beit Hanun city Tuesday morning.

The incident comes less than 48 hours after those hooligans killed one of Hamas’ field commanders in the city Mohammed Al-Kafarna and wounded another.

Palestinian security sources affirmed that the assailants were affiliated with Fatah faction and that the PA security elements were installing barriers to block and arrest them.

The series of armed assaults at the hands of those vandals was viewed as a “last ditch attempt” to derail the formation of the PA unity government which is expected to be announced before this weekend according to local observers and sources close to Hamas.

The recent string of murder crimes at the hands of those gangs prompted the cancellation of a Hamas-Fatah meeting with the presence of the Egyptian security delegation in Gaza city which was earlier scheduled to discuss ways and means to avoid any armed friction in the future and the implementation of previous deals between the two factions.

PA chief Mahmoud Abbas and PA premier-designate Ismail Haneyya affirmed that they have succeeded in overcoming 99% of the “thorny” issues between Hamas and Fatah in preparation for declaring the long-awaited PA unity government.
