El-Bireh mayor retained in Israeli custody contrary to earlier ruling

Sunday 4-March-2007

RAMALLAH (PIC)– An Israeli military court accepted the military prosecution’s appeal against the release of Sheikh Jamal Al-Tawil the mayor of El-Bireh city and turned down an earlier decision to reduce his administrative detention to three months.

Tawil’s relatives said that the court of appeals held its hearing on 17/1/2007 but did not pass a final ruling until the end of February.

The ruling further entailed the cancellation of the automatic release of Sheikh Tawil at the end of his administrative term scheduled for 17/4/2007.

The military judge justified the decision claiming that Tawil is one of the senior members of Hamas Movement and is still posing danger on the Hebrew state. He said that the only solution to his case at present is retaining him in administrative custody.

The mayor was arrested in mid April 2002 during the IOF so-called “Defensive Shield” operation that witnessed an IOF invasion of most of the West Bank areas and was sentenced to three years behind bars at the end of which in February 2005 he was held under administrative detention orders that were renewed since that date.

Meanwhile Sheikh Hussan Harb who is a resident of Eskaka village Salfit district was released from Israeli jails after 17 months of administrative detention without charge or trial.

Harb whose detention was renewed for six times said that Palestinian detainees in the Ramon desert prison were suffering inhuman incarceration conditions.

In the Negev desert prison prisoners said that the prison authority was tampering with their nerves explaining that the authority informs detainees of their imminent release then revokes the declaration.
