Palestinians demonstrate in defense of the Aqsa Mosque

Friday 23-February-2007

OCCUPIED JERUSALEM (PIC) — Thousands of Palestinians headed today to attend the Friday prayers at the Aqsa Mosque and to protest the continued excavations at the Magharba gate.

The Israeli occupation authorities deployed thousands of police and troops in the holy city and around it.

Only Palestinians carrying blue ID cards and over the age of 45 were allowed to go to the mosque.

West Bank Palestinians however are not allowed into occupied Jerusalem without a permit from the occupation authorities. Permits are not easy to get and thousands of West Bank Palestinians are denied entry into the holy city let alone reaching the Aqsa Mosque.

Clashes between Palestinian worshipers and Israeli occupation police took place after the Friday prayers around the Aqsa Mosque.

There were also clashes at the Qalandia road block which isolates occupied Jerusalem from the rest of the West Bank.

Sheikh Taysir al-Tamimi chief judge of Palestine had called for a day of demonstrations in Palestine and the Islamic world in defense of the Aqsa Mosque which is the target of repetitive Zionist attacks.

He warned against being deceived by Israeli lies and said that the occupation government is going ahead with its plans to judaize Jerusalem through changing its demographic make up obliteration of historic landmarks  effacement of its cultural identity and barring Palestinian people from praying in their mosques and churches.

Tamimi said that the international community should pressure Israel to stop its organized terror against the Palestinian people and their holy places.

Furthermore the Israeli attorney general signaled to the occupation police to start questioning sheikh Raed Salah on allegations of incitement of violence mutiny and racism.
