Abbas defends unity government in talks with Rice

Monday 19-February-2007

RAMALLAH (PIC)– PA chief Mahmoud Abbas on Sunday defended the Makkah unity agreement signed between his Fatah faction and the Hamas Movement during talks with visiting American secretary of state Condoleezza Rice.

Rice headed to meet Abbas in Ramallah after declaring that she would explore the “peace horizons” only hours after Israeli premier Ehud Olmert declared that peace chances were dwindling.

Rice is scheduled to have another meeting with Abbas on Monday in the presence of Olmert but no joint press conference was scheduled after the meeting.

Saeb Uraikat one of Abbas’ associates said that the PA chief explained to Rice that his main target was halting the feudal fighting and the security mess.

Rice told reporters at the onset of her two and a half hours meeting with Abbas that she hoped the tripartite meeting would reaffirm commitment to peace agreements.
