Jordan displeased with Abbas Fatah stand on king’s initiative

Wednesday 24-January-2007

AMMAN (PIC)– Spokesman of the Jordanian government Nasser Jouda has absolutely rejected Monday that the meeting between PA chief Mahmoud Abbas and Hamas’ supreme political leader Khaled Mishaal was a clear undermining of the initiative made by king Abdullah II of Jordan to bring Abbas and PA premier Ismael Haneyya together in Amman adding that Jordan was supporting all efforts to unite the Palestinians.

Last month the Jordanian monarch invited Abbas and Haneyya to Jordan as part of the kingdom’s efforts to bridge the gap between the two men; but while in Jordan Abbas rejected the initiative.

However political and media circles in the kingdom were frank enough as they expressed obvious dissatisfaction with Abbas’ stand on the initiative especially after he accepted Syrian invitation to visit Damascus and met with Mishaal there.

“Our Jordanian officials try to hide their dissatisfaction with the provocative and insulting way PA chief Abbas has dealt with the monarch’s initiative” said Jordanian writer Fahad Al-Khaitan who is close to the Jordanian government.

According to Khaitan Abbas has violated protocol when he turned down the king’s invitation from the royal palace in Amman; but he (Abbas) accepted Syrian invitation to visit Damascus and met there with Mishaal.

“Abbas failed his Jordanian friends and weakened Jordan’s official stand of isolating Hamas’ leadership abroad in favor of its leadership in Palestine” Khaitan asserted adding that Jordan appeared to start losing the Palestinian card amidst grave political failure and indifference on the part of Jordanian government and officials.

Fatah leader in Jordan summoned:
In a related matter Fatah political leader in Jordan Younis Al-Rejoub who had earlier issued threats to transfer disputes with Hamas into the Jordanian arena was summoned by the Jordanian security apparatuses and told to stop issuing such threats while in Jordan.

“He was summoned and arrested for one day. He was ordered to stop reiterating such statements while in Jordan” Jouda affirmed.

Rejoub issued unwarranted statements threatening Hamas of transferring disputes with it into the Jordanian arena and of targeting prominent figures of the Islamic Movement worldwide.
