Arab anti-settlement draft resolution to be submitted to UNSC

Tuesday 20-December-2016

The Arab Follow-Up Committee announced following a Cairo meeting on Monday its intent to submit a draft resolution condemning Israeli settlement across the occupied Palestinian territories.

Member of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) Executive Committee Ahmad Majdalani said on Tuesday the Arab Follow-up Committee has embarked on consultations with UN Arab member states to submit the anti-settlement bid by the end of 2016 or the start of 2017.

He told Quds Press that the Arab member states will discuss the best options to garner more votes in favor of the resolution.

According to Majdalani the U.S. is expected to veto the projected resolution or abstain from voting in the best of cases.

He said efforts have also been underway to submit a UNSC resolution to recognize Palestine as an independent state and grant the Palestinians full membership at the UN.

The resolution needs nine votes in favor to be passed provided that none of the permanent member states opposes.
