Former Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora and MP Bahiya al-Hariri expressed their dissatisfaction with an isolation fence being erected around the Palestinian refugee camp of Ein al-Hilweh near Sidon in southern Lebanon.
In a joint statement Sidon MP Bahia Hariri and Fouad Siniora expressed their firm rejection of the wall saying it will rather cause a state of tension that Lebanon doesn’t need at the moment.
According to the pair there are several other steps that can be taken in order to preserve security discipline and understanding and boost stability around the camp.
The two Lebanese politicians added that the wall gives an impression that there is animosity between the Palestinian and the Lebanese communities.
Hariri had reportedly contacted parliament speaker Nabih Berri and caretaker Prime Minister Tammam Salam along with Prime Minister-designate Saad Hariri regarding the issue.
The work on the wall around the refugee camp near Sidon became a point of controversy. Refugees called it a scar on Arabs’ face. Observers compared it to Israel’s apartheid wall dismembering Palestinian towns and villages in the occupied Palestinian territories.
