The Egyptian authorities on Tuesday morning backtracked on a Monday promise to stretch the opening of the Rafah border crossing with Gaza for a few more days.
Reporting from Gaza a PIC news correspondent said the Egyptian authorities officially updated the Palestinian side that the crossing will be closed as of Tuesday and in both directions.
Thousands of humanitarian cases among them patients and students have been left stuck at Rafah crossing point as a result of the abrupt closure.
Several Gazans expressed their disappointment over the Egyptian decision saying they urgently need to cross the passageway to undergo life-saving medical treatment outside of the besieged enclave. Others said they must reach their universities at the soonest time possible lest they be kicked out due to nonattendance.
Egypt decided to close the crossing after it opened it for three days only.
Following the Cairo-brokered reconciliation agreement struck between Fatah and Hamas last month Hamas officially handed over the crossings file to the Palestinian Authority chaired by Mahmoud Abbas hoping that the move will herald a new turn for the better in a territory blockaded by the Israeli occupation from all sides for over a decade’s time.
