Egypt closes Rafah border crossing with Gaza

Saturday 19-August-2017

The Egyptian authorities on Friday closed Rafah border crossing following an exceptional four-day opening.

On Monday the Egyptian authorities unblocked Rafah terminal to allow pilgrims from the blockaded Gaza Strip to fly to Saudi Arabia.

The Gaza-based Palestinian Interior Ministry said the Egyptian authorities decided to close the passageway after pilgrims and stranded passengers were allowed to pass through the crossing over the past four days.

Media chief of the crossing Wael Abu Muhssin said the crossing will be closed until further notice.

The last batch of pilgrims from the coastal enclave crossed Rafah terminal to Cairo International Airport before they headed to Saudi Arabia. Nine buses carrying dozens of humanitarian cases were allowed access out of Gaza.
