Rafah crossing to be opened for humanitarian cases

Tuesday 15-August-2017

Gaza’s Borders and Crossings Authority announced on Tuesday that Rafah crossing will be exceptionally opened on Wednesday and Thursday in both directions to allow humanitarian cases to leave the Gaza Strip and those stranded in Egypt to return.

Egyptian authorities on Monday opened Rafah crossing only for the travel of Gazan pilgrims to Saudi Arabia for Hajj and it will remain open until Thursday.

Borders and Crossings Authority said in a brief statement that it will publish a list of passengers’ names later in the day.

Since the beginning of 2017 Rafah crossing was opened for 10 days only during which 2624 passengers were able to leave the Gaza Strip while 3106 others returned.

Rafah crossing is the only outlet for the Gaza Strip to the outside world especially that it is not controlled by Israel which had imposed a land sea and air blockade on the coastal enclave for more than a decade.
