Gaza: Factions call on political rivals to neutralize health sector

Tuesday 11-July-2017

Palestinian factions in the Gaza Strip have called on Palestinian Authority (PA) chief Mahmoud Abbas and his government in Ramallah to keep the health sector in the impoverished enclave out of any political wrangling.

This came in a news conference held by the factions on Monday in al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza following a meeting with its administration.

In a speech on behalf of other factions Islamic Jihad official Khaled al-Batesh held Abbas and his premier Rami al-Hamdallah responsible for the worsening health situation in Gaza.

Batesh called on Abbas and al-Hamdallah not to use the health sector in Gaza to settle political scores with their rivals and urged them to assume their national and humanitarian obligations away from any other considerations.

“The Palestinian people in Gaza and the West Bank have one fate and one future so the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip especially the cancer and kidney patients should not pay any price for any political differences or conflicts” he said.

The Islamic Jihad official called on the government in Ramallah to necessarily and swiftly provide Gaza with its medical and health needs to save the health sector from collapsing.
