US bill to impose sanctions on supporters of Palestinian resistance

The US Congress has issued a draft resolution that provides for imposing sanctions on the foreign supporters of the Palestinian resistance represented by Hamas and the Islamic Jihad movements.

The bill entitled “The Palestinian International Terrorism Support Prevention Act of 2017” contains items explaining the mechanisms and details of the imposition of sanctions on persons agencies and instrumentalities of foreign states supporting Hamas and the Islamic Jihad.

The bill mentioned that Hamas was designated a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) by the Department of State on 8th October 1997 and was also named a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) by the Department of the Treasury under Executive Order 13224 in 2001.

Sanctions will be imposed on the foreign governments that provide financial support for Hamas the Islamic Jihad or their affiliates.

The bill provides that a report shall be submitted to the appropriate congressional committee on the activities of foreign countries to disrupt global funding finance and money laundry activities of Hamas and the Islamic Jihad.

It stipulates that not later than 90 days after the date of the enactment of the bill and every 180 days thereafter for a period not to exceed 3 years the Secretary of State the Secretary of the Treasury and the heads of other applicable Federal departments and agencies shall provide to the appropriate congressional committees a briefing on the disposition of the assets and activities of Hamas the Islamic Jihad or any successor or affiliate.
