Bo Schack: No one has the right to demand dismantling UNRWA

Tuesday 13-June-2017

Director of UNRWA’s operations in the Gaza Strip Bo Schack rejected on Tuesday the statements of the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in which he demanded dismantling the UNRWA.

In a conference on the ten-year Gaza blockade organized by the UNRWA and the European Union (EU) in Brussels Bo Schack said that the UNRWA was established by a UN General Assembly resolution and no government has the right to demand its dissolution.

Bo Schack gave a detailed account on the UNRWA activities in the Gaza Strip and the challenges it faced during the last ten years which are considered the harshest on the lives of Gazan citizens that affected all aspects of life in the coastal enclave.

Director of the Middle East Unit in the European Commission Michael Miller said that the UNRWA and the EU should cooperate in improving the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza by creating job opportunities for citizens.

He stressed the need to end the internal conflicts which have left negative impacts on the economic and social situation in the Gaza Strip.

Miller also expressed the EU rejection of any Israeli settlement activity in the West Bank and Occupied Jerusalem.

Advisor of the Palestinian mission to the EU Belgium and Luxembourg Hadi Shalabi pointed to the importance of the financial and political support provided by the EU to the Palestinian people.

Shalabi thanked the UNRWA for the humanitarian services it provides to Gazans and refugee camps in the diaspora and called on the EU to pressure the Israeli government to lift the blockade on Gaza.
