Saba’ Obeid: An ex-prisoner then a martyr

Saturday 13-May-2017

Two years ago the Israeli army and its special forces surrounded the house of Saba’ Obeid in the old city of Salfit and arrested him. Obeid was transferred to Megiddo prison where he served two years for his activity against the Israeli occupation forces (IOF).

Following the Friday prayer on 12th May 2017 an IOF soldier shot Obeid 20 right in the heart while taking part in a peaceful march in Nabi Salih village to the north of Ramallah in support for the hunger-striking Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails.

Resistance after captivity
Obeid resumed his activity against the Israeli occupation after his release. He would participate in confrontations with the Israeli army in the northern part of Salfit or invite the Palestinian youths to clash with the IOF soldiers and not to fear them.

A day before his martyrdom Obeid told one of his friends that he wishes to be martyred so that the Palestinian people would escalate their popular support for the hunger-striking prisoners because he was not satisfied with the weak solidarity campaigns launched to support the strike.

Obeid was the keenest among his fellow youngsters to confront the IOF in their break-ins into Salfit. He would throw stones close the roads (by burning tires or accumulating rocks) to hinder the movement of the Israeli vehicles and stay awake until a late hour to clash with the IOF soldiers in case they ventured to raid the city anew. He also received many threats from the Israeli Intelligence.

A friend of the martyr said that he is sad to be parted from his friend but he is happy at the same time because his friend got what he wished for.

A three-day strike was announced in Salfit following the martyrdom of Obeid. Citizens rushed to the hospital where his body is kept to bid him farewell.
