Islamic bloc announces participation in student council elections

Tuesday 11-April-2017

The Islamic bloc the student wing of Hamas Movement in An-Najah National University in Nablus city announced on Tuesday its intention to participate in the elections of Student Union Council to be held on April 18 after four years of suspension.

In a press conference the representative of the Islamic bloc asked the university administration to respond to the latest letter of students’ demands related to elections and to announce it officially on the university’s website.

The Islamic bloc leader and spokesman Mumin Sabbah told the PIC reporter that students’ demands stipulate holding the next elections as scheduled on the tenth week of the first semester in accordance with the university regulations endorsed in the academic year 2000-2001.

The Islamic bloc was exposed to continuous harassment by the Palestinian Authority security forces that culminated with arrest campaigns against scores of its members following the internal political division in the Palestinian arena that occurred in 2006.

The Islamic bloc resumed its activities in 2013 and won 31 out of 81 seats of the General Conference of the Student Union Council. The university administration postponed the elections over the past four years under false pretexts.
