Friday 24-March-2017

Cautious calm has prevailed in Ain al-Hilweh Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon after a night of violent clashes during which two people were killed and three others were wounded.

According to Lebanese media sources the clashes broke out following disagreements between Salafist factions over who would serve as members of a new joint security force in the Ain al-Hilweh refugee camp.

The camp witnessed throughout the night heavy gunfire and the firing of “B7” shells in addition to throwing grenades.

The fighting has so far resulted in two deaths including a leader in Fatah Movement while three were wounded including a woman.

Ain al-Hilweh is the largest of Lebanon’s 12 Palestinian refugee camps home to 100000 Palestinian refugees.

More than 450000 Palestinian refugees live across Lebanon in 12 camps amid unbearable living conditions following their forced displacement from Palestine in 1948 and 1967.
