Shahed urges Abbas to visit refugee camps in Lebanon

Thursday 23-February-2017

The Palestinian human rights organization Shahed urged the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to visit the Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon during his current visit to that Arab country in order to solve their problems.

“The repeated visits of Abbas to Lebanon did not change the reality of Palestinians who experience a great deal of suffering” Shahed said.

“The past visits did not benefit the Palestinians as far as demanding the Lebanese government to grant Palestinians their social civil and economic rights is concerned or to reduce the stringent security measures at the entrances of the camps which hinder the movement of Palestinians” Shahed added.

“Palestinians experience all kinds of suffering in terms of getting a decent medical treatment especially after the reduction of UNRWA services in addition to the astronomical unemployment rates” Shahed continued.

The organization pointed out that Abbas’s visit falls at a time when half of the Palestinians in Nahr el-Bared refugee camp are still displaced and some of whom live in places that are unfit for humans.

Abbas is scheduled to meet Lebanese President Michel Aoun Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri and the Speaker of the parliament Nabih Berri during his three-day visit.

Lebanon hosts around 480000 Palestinian refugees as registered by UNRWA. There are 35000 other refugees who are not registered with UNRWA.
