Director General of Israel Electric Corporation Yiftach Ron-Tal threatened on Tuesday to cut power to the West Bank over debts on the Palestinian Authority (PA).
Israeli TV Channel Seven quoted Ron-Tal as saying that talks are being held with the PA in order to pay massive debts exceeding 270 million dollars. The PA has recently paid 160 million dollars but the debt is still growing he pointed out.
Israeli authorities and the PA signed an agreement last September that obliges the PA to come up with a regular mechanism for collecting the unpaid electricity bills by consumers in the West Bank.
Israel Electric Corporation recently reduced power supply to many West Bank regions. The West Bank has been depending on Israeli power supply ever since it was occupied in 1967.
