Friday 22-December-2006

GAZA (PIC)– The PA Ministry of Agriculture issued a statement on Thursday in which it condemned the continued Israeli occupation targeting of Palestinian fishermen and trying to starve them and their families.

The Ministry condemned the killing of Hamadan Barhoum who was critically wounded when Israeli occupation gunboats opened fire at Palestinian fishermen off the coast of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip on 13th December and who died of his wounds on Thursday.

In its statement the Ministry stressed that the attacks of the Israeli occupation navy on Palestinian fishermen is on the increase and is a violation of the truce agreed on 26th November 2006.

The Ministry pointed out that not only the rate of attacks has increased lately but such attacks have become more serious to the extent of firing rockets at fishing boats and sinking them.

The Ministry added that not only the Israeli occupation navy bar Palestinian fishermen from going deep into the sea but they chase the fishing boats and deny Palestinian fishermen their only source of income.

The Ministry finally called on international human rights organizations to pressure the Israeli occupation to stop its practices against Palestinian fishermen as they have a right to work and make a living.
