Arab countries expect Hamas to win early elections

Friday 22-December-2006

NAZARETH (PIC)– Hamas’s rejection of President Abbas’s call for early elections is supported by neighboring Arab countries especially Egypt Jordan and Saudi Arabia according to the Israeli Haaretz newspaper.

In its issue published on Thursday the paper said that Jordan is worried that chaos might spread from the Gaza Strip to the West Bank and my spell over to Jordan which hosts a large number of Palestinian refugees thus King Abdulla II of Jordan expressed willingness to invite President Abbas and Prime Minister Haneyya for talks in Amman.

Egypt Jordan and Saudi Arabia doubt that Fatah could win a free and fair elections if held and expect Fatah to lose not only the legislative elections but also the presidential elections according to Haaretz.

Haaretz also claimed that Hamas’s stance stems from the presumption that Arab objection to early elections would serve to break down the siege imposed on the Palestinian Authority.

Hamas according to the paper has two winning cards the first one is the card of the truce which Hamas has control over and the other is that of the captured Israeli soldier giving Hamas the edge in shaping the political sphere of the Palestinian Authority.
